ESCANABA - Holy Name Catholic School, with a long tradition of quality religious education, is now entering a new beginning, according to Principal Joe Carlson.

"Our Catholic faith is the cornerstone of our school," said Carlson. "It is not just a class, it is a way of life that is incorporated thoughout the curriculum and the atmosphere of the school."

Carlson is relatively new at the helm of the school - he began in July 2008.

Carlson said the school recently implemented the new Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) testing.

"In summary, MAP state-aligned computer adaptive tests measure student achievement and growth," he said. "Tailored reports give educators information to drive further instruction."

Carlson said there are a slew of new improvements coming down the pike at Holy Name including the revamping of the middle school building and middle school curriculum, as well as updating classrooms and technology. He also mentioned new pacing guidelines.

"Each grade level will have standards-based curriculum pacing guides," he said. "These will not only include the Michigan state curriculum, but also a timeline of when classes will be teaching them."

Carlson said this will help parents stay informed of what their children are doing in school so they can support their learning at home.

Holy Name School has small class sizes, with an average class size of 16 students. They also offer the option of half-day or full-day kindergarten, as well as the Accelerated Reader Program. Carlson said the school's tradition of high MEAP scores and family-friendly atmosphere are key in student development.

"Teachers are the heart of the school and create a culture where it is cool to care," he said.

Holy Name Catholic School has open registration. Call Principal Joe Carlson for a tour or for more information at 786-7550.
