ESCANABA — Gerald and Betty (Nyberg) Heslip celebrated 50 years of marriage May 17, when they renewed their vows at the Rapid River Congregational Church, with Rev. Bill Rafuse officiating. The ceremony was followed by a luncheon, hosted by Women’s Fellowship and the couple’s children.

The couple became husband and wife in 1958, during a ceremony at St. Thomas church in Escanaba. Bridesmaids were Lois Heslip Martenson, sister of the groom, Helen Lunzman LeDuc, cousin of the bride and Mary Beth Heslip Ring, sister of the groom. Groomsmen were Larry Cartwright and Peter LaChance, friends of the couple, and Joseph Snow, cousin of the groom.

Gerald and Betty raised eight children together — Gerald (Fuzz) Heslip, Waipahu, Hawaii; Kathy (Cliff) Ross, Escanaba; Greg Heslip, San Diego, Calif.; Susan (Dennis) Micheau, Green Bay, Wis.; Sandra Kay Heslip, deceased; Christine Anne Heslip, deceased; Sharon (Dwayne) Carruthers, Bossier City, La.; and Anne Heslip Copperas, Cove, Texas.

The couple also has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Gerald and Betty are enjoying their retirement by traveling to the various states in which their children live, to spend as much time as possible with their growing family.
