She was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Hillsdale, Wis., and was the daughter of Harry and Winnifred (Barton) Snyder.
She spent most of her life growing up in Kingsford, graduating from Kingsford High School in 1941. Towards the end of World War II, she married Robert J. Anderson on May 19, 1945, after his return from overseas service.
Doris attended Dundon’s Business College and was an assistant manager at the Gamble’s store in Iron Mountain. She also worked for a time at June’s Sewing Basket. Doris and her husband, Robert, were blessed with three children and she prided herself in maintaining a safe and secure home for her family. She was an excellent seamstress and cook. She also was a gifted piano and organ player, playing for services for 56 years at Immanuel Baptist Church in Kingsford and Calvary Baptist Church in Escanaba. She taught Sunday School classes, was a deaconess, and was involved with the Girls Missionary Guild and junior high youth work. Doris was also involved with the Girl Scouts as a leader.
Doris was widely known for her gift of hospitality. She would entertain family and friends on a regular basis. She always welcomed visiting ministers, missionaries and their families into her home. Over the years, Doris and her husband, Robert, would host Bible studies in their home, which led to many people discovering a personal relationship with the Lord. She enjoyed winters in Florida and loved traveling to Mexico, Hawaii and Europe with her family.
Doris E. Anderson is survived by: a son, Rev. David (Marie) Anderson of Iron Mountain; two daughters, Susan (Steve) Krumlauf of Fridley, Minn., and Mary Jo Valentine of Escanaba; her grandchildren, Seth and Nate Anderson, Courtenay (Christopher) Guttormson, Kimberly Krumlauf, Shannon (Joe) Nieuwkoop and Laura Valentine; a great-grandchild, Bennet Nieuwkoop; two brothers, Keith (Norma ) Snyder of Mississippi and Robert Snyder of Los Angeles, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on Dec. 29, 2007.
Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (E.S.T.) Monday, May 19, 2008, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Doris E. Anderson will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Pat Radue officiating. A luncheon will be served in the church fellowship hall following the funeral services. Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
