Marquette gymnasts claim GNC

POSTED: February 22, 2008

MENOMINEE — Jamie Benam led Marquette to the Great Northern Conference gymnastics championship here Thursday.

Benam took all-around honors with a 32.575 score and also won uneven parallel bars (8.2) and balance beam (7.9). She was second in vault and floor exercise.

Heather Rusch of Escanaba won floor with 8.225 and Madelyn Johnson of Menominee won vault with 8.35.

Menominee was second overall at 110.425, Escanaba was third with 108.125 and Negaunee had 107.2.

“I thought my expectations for the GNC’s were very positive but the tables turned and the outcome was less than satisfactory,” said Escanaba coach Theresa Pascoe.

“I was disappointed with the scores on balance beam. I felt the team was off a couple of points, but five points is a lot. This event usually determines the outcome of the meet.”

Despite the disappointing finish, Pascoe said “we had a great season and a lot of enthusiasm. Our team is young with a lot of talent to move forward in skill development.”

Three Eskymos have qualified for regional competition March 1 at Rockford High School.

Rusch will compete in beam, floor and vault, Carrie Larson on beam and Abbey Pascoe in bars and vault.
