AIKEN, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina environmental group has settled a lawsuit with a Michigan potato farm that planned to withdraw billions of gallons of water from the Edisto River.
The Friends of the Edisto and Walther Farms said Tuesday they have reached a compromise on the Friend's challenge to the Department of Health and Environmental Control's approval of the farm's water withdrawal plan.
The company got DHEC's permission to take up to 9 billion gallons of water from the river to irrigate its 3,700-acre Windsor potato farm.
Walther Farms agreed to a variety of terms including cutting its initial surface water withdrawal in half.
The Friends agreed to refrain from taking further legal actions that would delay the farm from installing wells for irrigation purposes or planting crops in coming months.
