Ontonagon offers Carlson scholarship
ESCANABA — A group of friends have banded together to form a wonderful tribute to the late Bob “Cubby” Carlson. Shortly after his death in 2005, a group of friends decided to honor his memory to endow a perpetual scholarship in his name with the Ontonagon Area Scholarship Foundation. Carlson, a native of Gladstone and former football player for the Braves and Northland College, was principal and football coach at Ontonagon when he died at school. The group’s goal was $10,000, and in 2006 they set up a one-day golf outing as the primary fund-raiser. The first event was won by four college students who played for Carlson, and they promptly donated their winnings to the scholarship fund. Each subsequent winner has also donated their winnings. The goal was met after this year’s tourney, and the first Bob Carlson Award will be presented at graduation in spring. Generous donations from professional athletes and organizations have helped bring in funds.
