NAHMA TOWNSHIP — A Wisconsin man is dead following after the semi he was driving crashed near Nahma Township Friday.
At 10:31 a.m. Friday, troopers from the Michigan State Police of the Gladstone Post were called to a single-vehicle crash involving a semi hauling a tanker trailer filled with hot tar on U.S. 2 near 24.5 Lane in Nahma Township. The tanker was eastbound on U.S. 2 and travelled off the road and into the ditch on the south side of the roadway.
Bystanders performed CPR on the man until first responders arrived, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Neither alcohol nor speed are believed to be factors in the crash.
Both lanes of the highway were closed for an hour Friday. Then alternating lanes of traffic were opened up Friday afternoon.
Troopers advised there was no public danger or environmental impact due to the tanker carrying tar.
Michigan State Police were assisted at the scene by the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Nahma Township Volunteer Fire Department, Garden Township Fire Department, Gene’s Towing, Alger Delta Cooperative Electric Association, Rampart EMS, Tri-Star EMS, and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
